50 years of AMG History

Half a century from the beginning of the biggest tuning garage for Mercedes-Benz


The AMG brand has started as a tuning company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher are celebrating their 50 years of existence and success, overall the Mercedes-AMG brand has recorded a huge number of successes in the motor sport class and in the development of a specialised commercialised vehicles.

AMG celebrates its 50th anniversary since its foundation, and this is a successful story that has turned to be only a small garage and grown into a company with 1400 of employees but in the start it only happened to be with two employees named Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher.


The Revolution of AMG

Their first workshop was made in 1967 in an old mill as  a engineering office and design test center for the development of racing engines. The first success of Aufrecht and Melcher of Großaspach was the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 model, which undoubtably won the title in 1971 and took the second place in the 24-hour race Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.

The AMG factory at Affalterbach was opened in 1976 in the newly built racing car workstation, which has developed into the production of sports sedans and coupe. After 8 years in 1984 Melcher developed a brand new cylinder head with newest four-valve technology. The engine was used on the 5.0-liter V8 for the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC. Since then, the fact of “one man, one engine” has been known.

Since 1986 the new cylinder head is using in different variety of models, not just in the AMG S-Class design as primarily in the sedan or the limousine edition, year later in 1987 was seen in the mid-class model W124, with a power output of 360 hp.


Their mission was to build exterior as well as interior but the main passion were the engines, in addition they start to build a brand new engine from ”type of their class” with new advanced valve management system thanks to the specialised developed technology that they were using.

In co-operation with Mercedes-Benz started in 1990. The Model C36 AMG was introduced in 1993,and was their first car on the market in addition with their partnership Daimler-Benz.

Year 2005, Mercedes-AMG became a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler GA, and in 2009, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was launched and introduced for the first time, the first vehicle fully developed by Mercedes-AMG. AMG interior and exterior the SLS AMG GT3 was the winner competition in 2011, and after 3 years, Mercedes-AMG GT 2014 and the 43-series model attracted a wider range of customers.


Today Mercedes-Benz has decreased their sales profit, in 2016 a significant increased profit of 44.1 percent was achieved, which again represents a significant increase over the previous year. With 99.235 vehicles sold worldwide, the story of success for Mercedes-Benz sport tuning brand that has reach a new level, triple more cars sold since 2013.

Huge and dynamic growth in the production lines by continues development of high performance models, which are in demand as never before. On the other hand, the strategic expansion of the offer over the last years has also led to the successful development of new customer group. Therefore the global success of the company is not based of the popular eight-cylinder models of the 63 Series.

The 45-Series are sold out in high number as well Compact Series, along with a wide range of 43 Series models, has found its way to many customers, bringing the modern AMG product among best-selling sport vehicles today.
