Driving dehydrated is as dangerous as drink driving

Precautions of driving dehydrated

Researchers from Loughborough University, conducted a series of tests on male drivers over two days, and the tests were performed using a simulator for driving in laboratory conditions.

During the test with normal hydration, 47 incidents were recorded while driving, but when drivers were driving dehydrated, the number was increased almost twice and there were more than 100 errors on the system that indicate a level that could be expected from people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The incidents included: driving in opposite direction , braking delay and crossing over uneven surfaces or traffic lanes!

Ron Morgan, a nutrition professor dedicated to sports and recreational activities, said in his statement  “There is no doubt that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increases the risk of car accidents, but our results confirm that the risk is high in the case of insufficient fluid intake, so that drivers must consume water to be properly hydrated, especially during the summer period. “

Driving mistakes and accidents are measured for 68 % of all traffic in the UK, the European Institute for Hydration, which financed the research, recommend the drivers to be careful and make sure they are adequately hydrated before traveling in longer distances .
