Fiat 130 Sedan – The Italian king of the 60’s

At the end of the 1960s, the Italian car manufacturer Fiat made the biggest step and give a strong hit to the German premium limousine and coupe manufacturers Mercedes and BMW with the model Fiat 130. Everyone knew that Mercedes and BMW were very familiar all in specs of interior as well as exterior the design of this model.

According to many technical characteristics, few people say the design of the Fiat 130 has exceeded their expectations, and again, the big “fiat” has not experienced commercial success as the German manufacturers.By the end of production in 1976, about 15.000 sedans and only 5000 coupe of this model were sold.

The story of the “130” began in 1963 when it was decided to replace already the outdated sedan “2300”. The industry and economy in Italy was at that moment of collapse and it was decided to continue of the vehicle production.

Design of the Fiat 130

The exterior body of the sedan Fiat 130 and overall its design resembles to the smaller model of Fiat 125, as it is full of chrome trims and the glamorous look for that time. It is interesting that the factory decided to give the coupe model Fiat 130 a completely different design.

The coupe version was designed by Pininfarina an Italian designers and engineer studio, or more specifically their top designer Paolo Martin. The reward for his work was incredibly high, but overall there where a lot of complains and critics for the interior design of the Fiat 130, in the newspaper were written how the interior of Fiat 130 was made from plastic and old and obsolete materials.

The critics were corrected in 1971, when the sedan version of the Fiat 130 was restylated with the newer materials equipment. In addition to the bigger engine the 3.2 liter V6, the sedan model got the same interior of the coupe model that was pretty modern for its time.

The people who were actually tested the car were amazed by the smoothness of the drive, comfort and the output power. The power was transmitted on the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, or through three-speed automatic gearbox. The rest of the car was overall at the modern class with braking disks on the all 4 wheels.

The engine is specially developed for the Fiat 130. It’s a modern V6 petrol engine with overhead shaft. The first version of the engine was a 2.8 liter V6 with 140 hp and the newest one is with 3.2 liter V6 engine and 165 hp.

The front suspension is “MacPherson” and the interesting part is that it doesn’t have a classical spring, actually it does have a torsion springs, in order to fit a large V6 engine fitted with an air conditioning compressor or A/C system. The overall test was excellent, the chassis was strong and the stability was great, experts say that this model of Fiat 130 is actually better than the ”Germans”.
 
The ambition for this prestigious 130 model is the fact that it has specially designed and developed V6 engine, that wasn’t used in any other model, but in one situation the big V6 engine it does merge or mixed with the one for the Ferrari that was specially developed and built-in the Fiat Dyno facility. 

It was developed by Aurelio Lampredi, the legendary Ferrari designer. As a basis, he used the details that were prepared for the then revolutionary engine of the “Fiat 128”.

Thanks to increased diameter of the pistons the newer and stronger engine that is more powerful with 165 hp is they basically did strengthen the engine it make it ”bulletproof”. One of the biggest features that was actually the A/C system at the time with the breaking discs was also the power steering wheel that the Fiat 130 had and that power steering wheel was adjustable in both height and depth as most modern car in 2017.
