The Volvo XC60 is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars since 2008 and is now in its second generation, and brings a whole new levels of connectivity ,sophistication, efficiency and safety to the class.
It is also the first of Volvo’s mid-range 60 series models to showcase the company’s award-winning new design language and to be built on its advanced (SPA) platform.
Specification of the Volvo XC60 ( T6 ,T8 )
Volvo’s Twin Engine technology involves combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. In this case, it is the T6 engine of 320 hp, associated with a 65 kW (87 hp) electric unit located on the rear wheels and operated by a high voltage battery.
In total, the vehicle can deliver a combined power of 407 hp, but also travel up to 45 km in all-electric, without consuming a single drop of fuel.
”By taking advantage of the latest technology and clearly focusing on electrification, Volvo XC60 combines drive-E with responsiveness, fuel efficiency and exceptional driving pleasure,” says Henrik Green, senior vice president of R & D.
So, that we will launch our first all-electric model by 2019, and by 2025 more than one million electrified Volvo will be on the road, we already have the most relevant plug-and-play hybrid offer on the market with our T8 Twin Engine.”
The Volvo XC60 T8 Twin Engine can be driven in three modes selectable by a wheel located near the shifter. Electric mode: the vehicle only runs on electricity, up to 45 km without using the engine and therefore without the any drop of fuel.
Then, the heat engine takes over and goes into hybrid mode, which allows to move partially electric by recharging batteries that is done by rolling. This mode is active up to 120 km / h.
Hybrid mode: it is a combination of thermal and electric engines, which allows to drive serenely on all types of courses, and to save fuel in urban environment, the thermal block intersecting at a standstill, in phases starting and during maneuvers. It also assists the engine during accelerations, and its batteries are recharged during deceleration and braking phases.
Full power mode: this is the combined operation of the two engines to give a maximum of power – 407 hp – to the car, which then displays impressive performance while benefiting from a permanent all-wheel drive, the electric motor animating the wheels back.
The Volvo XC60 T8 Twin Engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 s, and is capable of reaching 230 km/h . This technology allows it to be approved with a combined consumption of only 2.1l/100 km.
Volvo XC60 Design
There are two more other modes totally dedicated to this version are accessible by the Sensus system:This feature allows you to operate the Volvo XC60 only in thermal mode to conserve maximum battery power and to be able to run in 0 emissions .
This function, in addition to the comfort and the choice of driving it , can prove to be saving to penetrate a city center that could be reserved for very low emission vehicles, or for example to roll without noise in an inhabited area in full night.
If a need for electrical energy is felt and the reserves are insufficient, this function allows to activate a direct supply of batteries from the engine, which can then walk again with the “Pure” electric mode for several kilometers.
The driver is never caught off guard and can always ride with the energy he needs according to the configuration of his journey.
While weighing 200 kg more than a T5 AWD version, the T8 Twin Engine is mated to the same 8-speed automatic transmission. It nevertheless enjoys a very good level of dynamism because the batteries are housed in the center of the chassis, under the central tunnel.
They do not amputate the living space or load, allow a better distribution of masses and lower the center of gravity of the car, which remains light to drive.
The interior of the new Volvo XC60 model is beyond excellent and the level of equipment plethoric. It is further reinforced in this exclusive version, which for example receives in series the controlled chassis, the additional programmable heating, the surround of the chrome windows or gear knob shifted in Orrefors crystal.
